Tim Sargeant

Tim is a commercial litigation and corporate insolvency specialist. He has extensive experience advising and assisting clients in a wide range of commercial and civil matters and disputes. He also acts for several insolvency practitioners in addition to advising private clients on insolvency related issues.

Tim has gained extensive experience working at leading law firms and has undertaken an in-house secondment at a major Australian government-owned telecommunications corporation, NBN Co Limited. He understands the importance of not only providing sound legal advice, but also sound business advice, and has a reputation for exceptional commitment to client service.


Tim’s expertise includes:

  • Alternative dispute resolution
  • Contract disputes
  • Disputes involving claims and defences under the Corporations Act
  • Finance default proceedings, including recovery of security, appointment of receivers, realisation of assets and mortgagee sales
  • Insolvency matters, including advising administrators and liquidators

Recent projects

  • Acting for a professional services firm in defence of Federal Court proceedings regarding its alleged involvement in the cross-border misappropriation of assets
  • Acting for the former Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney in respect of issues before the Victorian Parliamentary Inquiry into the Handling of Child Abuse by Religious and Other Organisations and the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse
  • Acting for the former Chairman of a listed company in relation to an ASIC investigation into the collapse of the listed company
  • Advising and appearing for administrators and liquidators in relation to several corporate insolvency issues and formal appointments
  • Advising and appearing in Federal Court proceedings for a Japanese car manufacturer in defence of a consumer law claim commenced by the ACCC
  • Advising and appearing in Federal Court proceedings for several investors in a public company now in liquidation
  • Advising and appearing in Supreme Court proceedings for an oppressed minority shareholder in a private company
