Beyond Borders – Episode 7: Navigating Turkish & Australian Family Law  

The latest episode of Beyond Borders is out now! In this episode, our Susan Warda and Antonia Marran, are joined by leading Turkish family law expert and International Academy of Family Lawyers Fellow, Mert Yalcin of Yalcin & Toygar Hukuk Burosu / Law Office. Together they sit down to explore the practical and legal challenges of cross-border family law matters from both Turkish and Australian perspectives.

Episode 7 unpacks what families need to understand before taking action, and the questions that client’s often ask, including where should they start a cross-border family law case. They otherwise discuss:

• The key differences between the Australian and Turkish Family Law system in divorce, the division of property and parental responsibility.
• The operation of the Hague Convention on International Child Abduction, and why child abduction cases take much longer in Turkey compared to Australia.
• Internation child relocation and cross-border parenting disputes, and the legal risks of moving a child overseas.
• Financial settlements, spousal maintenance, and whether property will be divided in the same way in both countries.

The Association is a professional body for female lawyers in this state at every level. They support lawyers, barristers and female members of the Judiciary. The Women Lawyers Association of NSW strive to enhance the working environment for women in law and have done so since 1952.

The Women Lawyers Assocation of NSW is hosting their 2026 Launce Event on 12 February 2026, with guest speaker The Honourable Justice Jane Needham SC of the Federal Court of Australia.
