“It’s great to be able to take clerks and graduates up to court so they can see what we do on a day-to-day basis. One seasonal clerk was able to attend most of a long trial in the Supreme Court of NSW in the few weeks they had in our team, and I know they found the experience really valuable.
Sonya Parsons | Partner
Charities and Purpose-Driven Institutions
“During the clerkship, I had the chance to experience both front-end transactional work in M&A and corporate advisory, as well as back-end dispute resolution and advisory work within the commercial disputes and insolvency team. This diverse experience allowed me to gain valuable insights into different facets of the legal profession.
Jae Lee | Lawyer, Litigation
Winter Clerkship Program 2023
“The ability to identify what truly matters, discard what does not, and communicate that distinction with clarity will become one of the defining professional skills of the next decade.”
Lauren Smyth | Special Counsel
Property
“What really sets Mills Oakley apart is how much the firm values junior team members. Your ideas and input are genuinely respected, regardless of your level of experience. From the outset, you feel like a valued and integral part of the team.
Zac Plant | Lawyer, Commercial Disputes & Insolvency
Winter Clerkship Program 2024
“Compared with other clerkships where you might not rotate, or otherwise only rotate for one to two weeks in each team, I found the Mills Oakley structure more conducive to finding a rhythm and to getting to know each team… Before clerking in Property I had never worked in a transactional (“front-end”) team. I really enjoyed my time in Property, which influenced my preference to rotate through Corporate Advisory (another transactional team) during my Graduate year.”
Eve Fitzgerald | Graduate Lawyer, Corporate Advisory
“The experience in the Mills Oakley clerkship program really helped clarify my interest in areas that combine legal analysis with ethical considerations – like litigation, regulatory compliance, and professional conduct. During my time in the Mills Oakley clerkship program, I assisted with legal research, drafted affidavits, and prepared advice memos. I also worked on drafting court submissions and even sought leave to instruct in Court. My work covered a range of issues, including directors’ duties, trust accounting, and enforcement options in litigation. I was involved in discovery and document review processes, always aiming to understand not just the legal frameworks but also the practical implications for clients.
Olivia Thurston | Law Graduate, Government
“Coming into the grad program this year was exciting, with excellent mentorship and chances to develop my skills. We are the first cohort to have a week dedicated to just pro-bono work, which is a great opportunity I’m looking forward to.”
Julietta Anthony | Law Graduate, Projects & Construction
“Throughout the clerkship and graduate program, I have been exposed to a variety of interesting legal work across different practice areas including Insurance, Not-For-Profit and Property. I have had great mentors who have provided me with continuous support and helped me to build confidence in my early legal career.”
Olivia Sharp | Law Graduate, Property
“Some of the most memorable times at Mills Oakley have been the social events organised by the firm. One highlight was taking part in the Law Institute Victoria Run/Walk that Mills Oakley participates in every year. The run is for a great cause and gave me the chance to meet people from across the firm, many of whom have become friends.”
Hope Mapleson | Graduate Lawyer, Commercial Disputes and Insolvency
