Michael is a special counsel in our Melbourne office who has been a commercial litigator for over a decade.  He joined Mills Oakley in 2016, having previously worked at international law firms Ashurst and King & Wood Mallesons.  He prides himself on his ability to quickly get to the heart of a dispute and master its detail.

Michael’s experience is extensive.  He has acted for ASX-listed companies, multinationals, private companies, government bodies and enterprises (Commonwealth, State and local) and high net worth individuals in matters involving contracts, consumer protection law, competition law, companies and securities law and regulation, environmental contamination and property transactions.

Michael has also acted in and advised on:

  • disputes arising from arrangements for the business-to-business supply of goods and services;
  • ASIC investigations — particularly of financial services providers;
  • clients’ internal investigations of potential contraventions of the law; and
  • schemes of arrangement for mergers and acquisitions.

Michael’s recent matters include:

  • Acting for ANZ in Australia’s largest class action; customers who sought to recover fees such as those charged for late payments on credit cards were ultimately unsuccessful.
  • Acting for a financial services provider suing a competitor established by its former CEO for breach of confidence and inducing its customers to breach their contracts with it.
  • Acting for a Melbourne local council in a highly complex dispute with a neighbouring council which was settled for $10M.
