| Day in the life of a trainee |
|
Ivana Mujic has spent the last year as a trainee in the Mills Oakley Melbourne office. She explains what it’s like to work at our firm for a day... 6.30am - The alarm goes off and before I get the chance to hit the snooze button I jump out of bed and head out to the park for a run… 8.15am - Get on the bike and pedal down to the office, by far the fastest way to commute! 8.45am - Check emails and scribble out a quick ‘to-do list’ to have an idea of where the day is going to take me and what should get done. 9am - I start pulling together and reviewing materials in preparation for this morning's Supreme Court hearing. It's a relatively straightforward corporations application but I have conduct of the file (under supervision of course!) and am attending Court with Counsel this morning so I want to make sure it’s all ready to go. 10:30am - The matter is called, Counsel does his part, and we get the orders that we want. 11:30am - A quick coffee on the fly on the way back to the office before sharing the good news from this morning with my supervising partner. 12:30pm Get back to some missed calls and emails and before you know it…. 1pm - Lunchtime! A tasty pizza from the new place across the road is the order of the day. I also manage to challenge a couple of the other trainees to a game of table tennis. 2pm - Back at my desk in preparation for today’s client meeting with a Senior Associate. It's a pretty large matter and a good opportunity to read the file, familiarise myself with the materials we have been provided and ask any questions I have prior to the meeting. 3pm - Meet with a new client in the boardroom to get instructions for a new case. 4pm - A cup of tea and a quick flick of the paper before delving into a letter of advice that needs drafting following the client meeting. 5pm - Winding up a day's work, I remember that 'to do list' and check off anything for tomorrow. 5:30pm - Pedal home for dinner and a glass of wine before catching up with my housemate on the events of the day. 10pm - Get whatever gear I need for the following morning sorted and hit the hay. |
