Adam is a Partner within Mills Oakley’s Workplace Relations, Employment & Safety team in Melbourne. 

Experience

Adam has nearly twenty years experience acting on behalf of many Australian corporations and government instrumentalities and for multi-national corporations and government organisations throughout the Asia Pacific region.  Prior to joining Mills Oakley, Adam led the workplace relations group at Allens in Melbourne.

Expertise

He is an employment law specialist and his depth of understanding as to how industrial relations and employment issues impact upon the operations of his clients means his advice is regularly sought by many of our high profile clients.  Adam has extensive experience across the full range of employment law matters including advice on workplace change and restructuring, employment contracts, termination and unfair dismissal actions, preserving confidential information and IP, enforcement of post-employment restrictive covenants, anti-discrimination actions and workplace related advice, policy development and litigation.

Adam acts across a wide range of industries including mining, manufacturing, infrastructure, power generation, insurance, banking and finance, professional services, media and entertainment, IT, retail, education and government.

The employment aspects of mergers and acquisitions, restructurings and other significant commercial transactions are one of Adam’s areas of specialistion.  In addition to the due diligence and drafting aspects of transactions, he advises clients on issues such as transmission of business, harmonisation of policies and benefits, redundancies and treatment of senior executive remuneration and termination.  Adam is skilled at ensuring the treatment of employment issues in transactions is managed smoothly and effectively having regard to industrial relations, organisation and other considerations as well as the legal issues.

Adam also specialises in senior executive employment issues, including remuneration and benefits, termination and post-employment restraints.

He is regarded as one of the leading authorities on the impact of social media in the workplace.

Recent matters in which Adam has acted include:

  • The acquisition of a competitor by one of Australia’s leading mining companies
  • Demerger of a significant business of one of Australia’s leading leisure and entertainment groups
  • The acquisition of a foreign bank
  • The refranchising and transfer of employees in the Melbourne metropolitan rail and tramways network
  • Establishment of a new power generation business including all aspects of engaging employees and policy development

  • Admitted in Victoria, Tasmania, Western Australia

Other roles and associations

  • Adam has been appointed to the Advisory Board for the Centre of Employment and Labour Relations Law at the University of Melbourne.
  • He regularly lectures at seminars and develops and runs client training programmes on employment and industrial relations matters with a particular focus on compliance and prevention.
  • Adam’s commentary is regularly sought by media organisations in print, radio and online in relation to workplace issues.
